Back To School, Back To Self-Care

The start of a new school year can mean different things for different families. For some, it means relaxed summer schedules are a thing of the past and busy morning routines coupled with crazy afternoon carpools, pick-ups, and sports practices are just beginning. For others, it might mean hectic summer days with your children constantly around are swapped for some free space in your schedule while the kiddos are away at school. No matter which scenario best describes you, we know all parents deserve more self-care!

We are here to help you sneak in some self-care with a few easy tips so you can be the best version of yourself for your little ones.

One: Schedule Self-Care.

We know you most likely don’t want to add yet another thing to the calendar, but fitting in self-care activities should be as important as setting appointments for the kids. Fixed but flexible-to some degree- we know life happens but make a point to re-schedule within a week if needed. So, throw that afternoon walk with some other parents on the calendar before picking up the kids or schedule a lunch date with a friend. Treat these appointments with as much importance as any other item on your calendar.

We know some of you will get sneaky, so let's just throw it out there: these self-care appointments are not errands! These appointments are for you to enjoy and relax.

Two: Sleep Is Self-Care

Sleep is a serious matter! According to a study done by Toho University Graduate School Of Medicine, sleeping less than six hours a night was linked to increased BMI and an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. We know nighttime routines can be a pain, especially as the kids get back to a slightly more rigid nighttime routine than during the summer months. Just like your children, try to establish a bedtime. Even if it's only an hour earlier than you normally would go to bed.

Also, be sure to set yourself up for success by unplugging from all your devices an hour before bedtime, dimming your lights, setting your AC to a slightly cooler setting, and grabbing a book to help you relax and encourage sleep.

Three: Doctors' Appointments Are Self-Care Too

While doctors' appointments aren’t as fun as a mani-pedi or as relaxing as a massage or a long soak in the tub, they are necessary and important. For instance, if you've been struggling to lose weight be sure to bring up your concerns with your doctors so they can work with you to put you on the best treatment plan before developing other health concerns. Making time for routine visits so you can address your health concerns and combat health problems down the road is imperative, for you and your family.

Pro tip: Book your appointment when you are booking appointments for the rest of the family so everyone has an appointment on the books.

Four: Self-Care Is Different For Everyone

What you deem as self-care may be different than what someone else deems as self-care. For example, some people find meditating very relaxing and greatly enjoy adding it to their day as part of their self-care routine. However, others find mediating difficult, stressful and don't see any benefits. If you aren't on board with a specific self-care technique or activity simply leave it out of your routine and explore other options.

When done right, self-care can be incredibly rewarding and a great way to combat the stress of everyday life. We hope you take these tips to heart as you move forward on your wellness journey.
