For those starting out on a weight loss journey, it can be frustrating to not see the number on the scale drop as quickly as you expect. Seeing big weight loss numbers from others can be inspiring, but remember that may reflect progress made over months or even years.
It is easy to get wrapped up on the number on the scale that we can check every morning in the bathroom. We can miss all the other ways our lives, our bodies, and our health have changed for the better—also known as “non-scale victories” (NSV).
Non-scale victories celebrate results in many forms. Focusing on other measures of success can keep us kind to ourselves throughout the journey. You might even find non-scale victories show a more accurate picture of your progress.
Seeing what your changing body is capable of is one way to notice non-scale victories. Maybe you can now walk for a mile without getting out of breath. Chasing the kids around the yard is suddenly not a big deal. You’re building stamina by being able to work out longer at the gym.
Clothes are another way to celebrate your changing body. Having to grab a smaller size dress at the store or fitting into an old pair of jeans from years ago is cause for applause! And it’s not just about losing inches around your waist. Have you had to tighten your wrist health tracker a notch or two tighter? That’s a non-scale victory.
You’ve been working hard to eat healthier foods with smaller portions, but have you noticed any changes in how or why you eat? Realizing you aren’t eating when you’re not actually hungry or because you’re stressed out is a big win! Committing to a healthy eating plan isn’t easy. Be sure to recognize all the work you’ve been doing, like being able to skip the drive-thru on your way home from a long day at work.
How can you keep track of all these non-scale victories? Writing them down as you realize them is an easy way to start. Try a gratitude journal to keep track of your non-scale victories. If you want to celebrate with others, communities on social media are a great place to share.
Observing and appreciating your non-scale victories can help you find a renewed sense of confidence—and empower you to continue on your weight loss journey!
